AC Induction Motor Design
With the power-density increase realized through the use of 400 Hz power, most new designs for AC induction motors are for aerospace applications. Designs are typically air-cooled and may incorporate fans. Thermal protection is typically required and is provided by a three-phase thermal cutout from Klixon’s ACMP or phenolic line. Designs typically incorporate robust military-grade connectors such as a D38999 series or similar. Output ranges from fractional horsepower to approximately 5 horsepower. Device operational speed is set by line frequency, the number of magnetic poles, and the slip associated with the load point.
