Brush DC Motor Design

Though most new designs incorporate newer brushless technology or utilize 400 Hz AC power for aerospace applications, there are still fundamental applications where a brush motor is the most sensible. This can be dictated by cost, or by the hostile environment in which the motor is expected to operate. For instance, a brush motor lacks the sensitive power electronics required to operate a brushless permanent-magnet motor, electronics that may be susceptible to an EMP attack. The simplicity of operation makes brush DC motors an attractive option when actuation propulsion is required. This can be in the form of a permanent-magnet brush motor, or a field-wound brush motor (series, shunt, compound, or separately excited).
